Ordering GS1 Complete and implement UDI

What happens after your GLN has been assigned?

In order to label your products in a UDI-compliant way, the following steps are required:

1. Create GTIN

Based on your GLN, you create the GTINs with the corresponding check digit yourself. Alternatively, you can order the GTINs incl. check digit directly with GS1 Complete.

2. Allocate UDI-DI

Allocate the GTINs to your products according to the GTIN allocation rules - the UDI-DI is ready.

3. Define the UDI-PI

Specify which other information (e.g. batch, expiry date) should be encoded as UDI-PI in the UDI carrier.

4. Define Basic UDI-DI

For the Basic UDI-DI, use the Global Model Number (GMN) - the Basic UDI-DI is required in Europe for the provision of master data in EUDAMED and the mapping with all relevant documents. The GMN is also generated by using your GLN, but never encoded in a barcode.

5. Generate GS1 barcodes

Decide which GS1 barcode (e.g. EAN-13, GS1-128 or GS1 DataMatrix) you want to use as the UDI carrier for the product. Finally, you can use appropriate software solutions to generate the desired GS1 barcode, taking into account the GS1 data identifier concept for UDI-DI and UDI-PI.

6. Quality check

As part of the quality check, make sure that the GS1 barcodes created comply with the GS1 specifications.
